Judges Critique - Claire Millward - Alouann
I was both thrilled and honoured to be invited to Judge in September at The Evergreen Afghan Hound Club in Portland. This appointment formed part of the Afghan Hound Nationals. I was delighted that entries reached the maximum amount of 100 with 49 entrants in my Best of Breed Class.
I was joined on my trip by my sister Elizabeth, Linda Race, of the famous Kaskarak Kennels and Janine Brownless. We had a fabulous time enjoying the many sights of Portland with a bit of nightlife thrown in and that’s a whole other story!! Plenty of shopping too in what is now my favourite tax free city.
I judged on the final day - Sunday 29th September, so the Saturday I was shown around Columbia River Gorge National Park and the many waterfalls on the old highway by member of the committee Leslee Greer, rounded off by the most amazing meal overlooking the River.
The Sunday of my appointment I was second in the Arena so some time killing in the morning. It was nearly 3pm before I got started, meaning the appointment went well into the evening and I thank the exhibitors for being patient. The dogs put in the most spectacular performances baring in mind this was the final day of a week of Showing and the torrential rain we had. I really felt for them keeping the dogs clean and dry.
My Steward was the well known Basenji Breeder Katie Campbell who did an amazing job of keeping the dogs in the order I wanted them in the ring, and announcing my winners. The prizes on offer were superb I wished I was showing myself. We had a large carpeted ring with picket fence, many, many spectators from all over the world who had travelled over for National week. It was nice to see so many UK faces too.
I found the overall quality good, however found many poor shoulder assemblies and some of the professional handlers for me were very hard on their charges. That said, presentation was A1. It has been many years since I last visited the US and I found the overall quality to be so much better.
My main winners were as follows:
My Best Puppy In Show - Stormhills Wish Upon A Star, owned by Sandy Frei, Terri Vanderzee, Patricia Silverman, and Dick Hafner. I just loved this puppy. He was just over 6 months and put in a real solid performance. Completely sound as a bell, balanced throughout, and strode around that ring with ease. Lovely Masculine head without coarseness under all that lovely monkey fluff, level top line, beautiful sweeping quarters. and for me won over my best puppy bitch on his fall away and tail set, even though she had the edge on maturity. He has an exciting future for sure, and I can’t wait to watch with interest. I would have bought him home in a heartbeat. It was interesting to see I also did well for his litter mates. A fantastic litter and his breeder should be very proud of them all.
My Best of Winners - Jacosta Gold But Not Copper, Bred By Stephen Wheeler, owned by Didier Coton. I have admired this dog on several occasions ringside in Europe and boy was he on his game that day. It was interesting to see my Reserve Winners Dog was his son so he clearly is proving himself as a producer too. He has a real style of High order, and beautiful carriage on the move. Well made throughout, balanced without exaggeration. I just love his head, for me one of the best of the day. I actually found him very similar in Phenotype to my Best In Show winner and this is a type I love. I'm pleased to hear he has since made the trip back over to the US and gained his US title.
My Best of Opposite - GCh Mahali Arriva Sandpiper, owned by Joan Baulkus, David Cooley, Suzanne Neil, Lynne Schanzle, and Jim Prasapio. This boy is the most upstanding Blask Mask Gold. Completely filled my eye, and challenged hard for Best In Show.
Handled to perfection, he drives around the ring with effortless stride, lovely head and expression, level top line, balanced fore and aft. Lovely ring tail, presented in excellent muscle tone. I loved this boy and he is very worthy of his Grand title and many wins. It was my honour to award him Best Opposite in Show.
Best in Show – Gr Ch Criston Enchanted, owned by Christine Pinkston, and handled by Anna Stromberg. All I can say is the minute she entered the ring the hairs on the back of my neck went up. I couldn’t take my eyes off of her. She is the most stylish of bitches. Beautiful far away expression and chiseling, every part of her flows as your hands run over her best of fronts, and beautiful rear angulation. Good spring of ribs, short powerful loin, excellent fallaway and ring tail. Presented to the last hair, and shown beautifully by her
talented handler. Her long springy gait just got better and better the more she moved. I was honoured to award her my overall Best in Show.
I would like to thank the committee for their hospitality and the membership for voting and giving me the chance to see these beautiful hounds. It was an appointment I will always remember.

I was thrilled to be invited to judge at this very prestigious specialty show held at the wonderful Argus Ranch Facility show ground, what a beautiful setting for a dog show! My Friend Lyn Appleby came with me for company, I have to say we were very well looked after and had the most wonderful hospitality shown to us on our visit to Seattle Washington, many thanks to the committee for this wonderful invitation.
I was very pleased with the quality, handling and presentation of the dogs I had entered under me for my consideration, my heart felt thanks to all the exhibitors who came and made my day so special and enjoyable.
My winners dog and BOW was the young handsome gold male Polo's Special Forces, a very lovely young dog with the most beautiful head, lovely dark eye, correct balance of front to rear quarters and a lovely correct ring tail which he carried well on the move, he is a stylish and very eye catching boy who should continue to improve with maturity, nicely handled and presented.
My winners bitch was the very pretty Xandali Joie de Vivre Of Lafara what an exquisitely feminine girl of lovely proportions, a very beautiful head and lovely dark eye giving a true look at me expression, she gave a very good account of herself and did all that was asked of her, this win gave her last points for her title, congratulations.
Then to my beautiful BOB class!!! A fabulous class to judge thank you all for the experience.
My BOB and SBIS was the stunningly handsome black mask gold GCH Mahali Arriva Sandpiper! What a Stallion of a dog! To me this dog had it all, he is masculine and strong without being course, excellent head piece, very well made throughout with a great top -line, long ribcage, strong short loin, tail carried at the correct angle he was in superb condition, and was handled to perfection, when asked to move he pulled out all the stops to top
this lovely class, he is a dog I would love to own. Congratulations to his Owners and Handler.
My BOS was the stunningly beautiful CH Tru'Gaits Simply Bliss At Raffica. This bitch was another who pleased me in all respects! She gave the dog a run for his money, a black and silver bitch with a fabulous head, good strong under jaw, long neck and absolute perfect balance of angulations, lovely quarters, long correct ring tail carried at the correct angle when on the move, and boy she could move!! Presentation and handling was 1st class. Another I would like to own.
